Carbon fiber (a.k.a. graphite fiber) is a material that furniture designers have stayed away from in the past. That has changed in the last few years says Didier Krzentowski, Owner & Director of Galerie Kreo.
Kreo has some great examples of carbon fiber work at Design Miami/ Basel this year.
The properties of carbon fiber – such as high tensile strength, low weight, and low thermal expansion – have made it a material primarily used by civil engineers and designers in the automotive and aerospace industries. The material consists of extremely thin fibers composed mostly of carbon atoms. The carbon atoms are bonded together in microscopic crystals that create a weave like pattern.
Galerie Kreo is showing three carbon fiber pieces by three different designers. “Carbon” desk designed by Martin Szekely in 2010 is making its debut at the fair. It is a limited edition of eight.
Also on display is “Karbon” long chair by designer Konstantin Grcic. The piece was made from a single mold in 2008.
Then, there is Marc Newson’s “Carbon” ladder made in 2008. There is only one ladder left in this limited edition, so hurry up.
