THE GLOBAL FORUM FOR DESIGN/
Hostler Burrows (formerly known as Antik) specializes in design and decorative arts of Scandinavia from 1920 to 1960. At the fair this year, you will see work by Axel Einar Hjorth, Josef Frank, Finn Juhl, Axel Salto, Stig Lindberg and Brendt Friberg. In addition to these incredible examples of historic design, you will also see brand new work by Charles de Lisle in Hostler Burrows booth. Gallery Owner Juliet Burrows says de Lisle’s forms and sculptural designs evoke a similar feel to the Scandinavian masters the gallery is known for.
Charles de Lisle works with reclaimed wood from the Redwoods. For the past twenty years, the designer has worked with various craftspeople and artists in California who “have a certain artisanal character of woodworking.” “I design new furniture using their language,” explains de Lisle.
At the fair, you can see a unique set of chairs called Chainsaw Lounge Chairs. They were made in collaboration with the artist and wood sculptor Rick Yosimoto, who literally cuts, sculpts and does hand finishing details with various types of chainsaws. “He works like a surgeon,” says de Lisle.
The two chairs at the fair are made from one piece of wood from a Redwood tree that was over 1,000 years old. The tree was cut down in the 70’s to make way for a winery. De Lisle says the scale of his pieces are dictated by the wood found. With these chairs, he wanted the wood to “mimic the forms of upholstery furniture.” They have a blackened finish courtesy of 1940’s black shoe die.
Also at the fair is de Lisle’s Chainsaw Dressing Mirrors. These mirrors are made from a 300 year old tree from the Redwoods. The pieces of wood were reclaimed ten years ago when a water tower was dismantled. The mirror’s frame has a textured interior while the exterior and lip have a smooth waxed finish.
