Art Smith’s Half and half Presented By Mark McDonald Gallery at Design Miami/ 2011

Mark McDonald Gallery specializes in mid-twentieth century decorative arts, including jewelry and furniture. The gallery is participating in Design Miami/ for the first time this December and Gallery Owner Mark McDonald has high hopes.

“I’m looking forward to participating for the first time in Design Miami/. Decorative arts are a truly important art form and are having the chance to prove it right along side the Basel/Miami fair,” says McDonald. “We will be showing a number of pieces of important mid-century jewelry by artists, Alexander Calder and Harry Bertoia, and studio jewelers, Margaret DePatta and Art Smith. We will also feature furniture by American architects, Frank Lloyd Wright.”

From Art Smith, fairgoers will see Half and half. The necklace is made in brass and was designed c. 1950. Smith is known for both his beautifully hand-crafted pieces, as well as his famous clientele. He once designed custom cufflinks for Duke Ellington that incorporated the first notes of Ellington’s famous 1930 song Mood Indigo. He also designed custom pieces for Eleanor Roosevelt in his day.

Frank Lloyd Wright Table Presented By Mark McDonald Gallery at Design Miami/ 2011

McDonald will also be bringing a pair of Frank Lloyd Wright tables to the fair. The tables were originally made for the Laurent House in Rockford, Illinois in 1948. The furniture that Frank Lloyd Wright designed during this period was always specific to the architectural structure that housed it. It was often created with excess materials from the architectural project itself. The tables coming to Design Miami/ are made from six pieces of cypress, all cut to the same shape and dimensions.

Mark McDonald Gallery is located in Hudson, New York. It is housed in a renovated, historic, three-story building that was originally built as a department store in 1910.
