Designs By Dr. Haresh Lalvani Presented By Moss At Design Miami/ 2011

You don’t need an advanced degree in mathematics to realize that the work Moss Gallery is presenting at Design Miami/ is beautiful, captivating and intelligent. Moss is back at Design Miami/ this year with a solo exhibition of the work by Dr. Haresh Lalvani, architect, sculptor, inventor, morphologist and Professor of Architecture at Pratt Institute. The exhibition is entitled: Mass Customization of Emergent Designs . It showcases two collections by Dr. Lalvani – HyperSurface and Morphing Fruit Platters 1D Series 300.

At the fair, you can see twelve pieces from HyperSurface and 100 pieces from the Morphing Fruit Platters 1D Series 300. For over thirty years, Dr. Lalvani has been working to decode the morphological genome that encodes potentially all forms, for design applications. These series bring his discoveries to life.

Franklin Getchell explains it best. “Essentially, Dr. Lalvani continues to identify the universal generative principles underlying forms and patterns, both man-made as well as those found in nature. The morphological genome permits digital manipulation of form in the design process, thereby enabling mass customization in digital manufacturing,” says Getchell.

“In sequencing the morphological genome and sculpting works, both functional and abstract, from such principles, Dr. Lalvani stands at the intersection of art and mathematics—more specifically, at the dawn of genomic design, art, and architecture.”

The HyperSurface series explores the genetic code of shapes based on a sequence of numbers. In HyperSurface, Dr. Lalvani applies this to 3-dimensional structures. The Morphing Fruit Platters 1D Series 300 generates patterns that morph continuously from a range of “discernible” patterns to a range of “non-discernible” patterns, or “chaotic” patterns.

The HyperSurface and Morphing Fruit Platters 1D Series 300 were developed during the past fifteen years in collaboration with Bruce Gitlin and Milgo\Bufkin, the renowned art-metal fabricator. All the pieces on display at Design Miami/ are unique and made with laser-cut steel.
