THE GLOBAL FORUM FOR DESIGN/
Established in 1989 in Paris, Galerie Patrick Seguin showcases the talent of French designers from the 50s such as Jean Prouvé, Charlotte Perriand, Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Jean Royère. Today, these designers are recognized as major contributors to the history of design in the twentieth century. Galerie Patrick Seguin has rare examples of work by all of these legends at Design Miami/ this year.
At the fair is a Jean Prouvé shelf from 1948 created for the Ferembal House, a demountable house made with prefabricated wood panels by Prouvé. The architectural structure was recently adapted by Jean Nouvel and reconstructed in the Jardin des Tuileries near the Louvre in Paris as part of FIAC 2010 (the Paris Design and Architecture Festival). In Prouvé’s design, some of the furnishings in this house (including this particular shelf) were also integral parts of the architecture. The shelf was originally mounted on pivots between the floor and ceiling and served as both a shelving structure and a room partition.
Visitors will also see Granipoli table, which was one of Prouvé’s first commissions. The table’s design dates back to 1936 but the model was actually made in 1939 for a vacation spot in St Brévin l’Océan.
“The design was adapted to local climatic conditions – especially humidity – by galvanizing all metal parts and by applying on the top a fibrated cement material known as Granipoli,” explains Gallery Owner Patrick Seguin. “Thirty tables were made at the time but now only seventeen remain. Most of them are a part of private collections and museums.”
Gallery Patrick Seguin is also showing a Charlotte Perriand-Ateliers Jean Prouvé unique bookshelf commissioned in 1957, a unique table designed by Pierre Jeanneret for his private residence in Grenoble, and a 1960s floor lamp by Le Corbusier.
